Container Summary

1 undated ALS from John William De Forest to "Dear Sir" [presumably Frank Leslie] offering to provide a novel for serial publication. The novel was about reconciliation between the North and South after the American Civil War. Also, 1 AMS by De Forest titled "Memoranda Concerning J. W. De Forest" providing a biographical sketch of De Forest, a list of his publications, opinions from the press about his work, and reference to his military service during the Civil War in the 12th Connecticut. References to General Nathaniel Banks, General Benjamin Butler, General Philip Sheridan, Port Hudson[, Louisiana], Freedmen's Bureau, "Overland," "Kate Beaumont," and the "Wetherel Affair." And, 1 ALS dated 10/13/1884 from De Forest to Frank Leslie's Publishing House stating that he does not have a manuscript novel at hand.
