E. O. C. Ord Materials

 Series
Identifier: 1259

Series-level Scope and Content Note

Contains a fair amount of correspondence from Edward Otho Cresap Ord, some correspondence to him, and correspondence and manuscripts about him. Letters from and to Ord appear first, are arranged chronologically, and date from 1848 to 1880. Most of the letters were written by Ord to his brother James Lycurgus Ord and provide vivid descriptions of life in California in 1848, with discussion of the Mexican War, the gold rush, and Ord's associates, such as William T. Sherman. Manuscripts and correspondence about Ord appear next in the series. Finally, a few photographs, including a Mathew Brady photograph of Ord, round out the series.
