Container Summary
7 AJE dated 10/12/1834-10/18/1834 containing JPB's criticisms of an opera entitled, "La Dame Blanche", and on the French's lack of creative imagination. Despite his dislike of this opera, he does express approval for Germaine De Stael's Delphine and the work of Denis Diderot. Several evenings spent with acquaintances such as Joseph White, John Mason, and Daniel Sheldon are also described. There is also a brief glimpse into JPB unhappiness with his present position in society (p.175). "Oh how I hate this borrowed light, shall I ever shine in any other"? He laments the fact that it is only because of the fame of his uncle, James Brown, that anyone recognizes him as a member of high society. Pages 174-189
