Container Summary
1 ALS dated 9/23/1863 from Z. T. Miller to his sister, explaining that he expected a raid from Fitzhugh Lee, mentioning the construction of four forts in honor of four Union soldiers who died in recent battles (Fort Peisner, Fort Mahler, Fort Dessaur, and Fort Griffith), and discussing an enclosed circular by Carl Schurz. That particular handwritten circular dated 9/21/1863 signed by Carl Schurz also is retained in this folder, and it reports that intercepted Confederate dispatches suggest Fitzhugh Lee will attack soon and that the 61st Ohio and 143rd New York will be on alert.
