Container Summary

1 ALS from Z. T. Miller to his mother Ann Miller, indicating his unit is about 30 miles south of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where a great battle just occurred. Description of the town and inhabitants of Westminster, Maryland. Miller saw 3,000 Confederate prisoners pass by the town. Miller explains that he heard no cannon yesterday, so he alludes to the battle of Gettysburg being over. Comment on the 61st Ohio and the 157th New York. Comment about George Gordon Meade taking over for Joseph Hooker. Mention of the possibility that the enemy army may escape, as George B. McClellan allowed it to after Antietam. Sent from camp near Westminster, Maryland.
