1 ALS from Z. T. Miller to his mother Ann Miller, informing her that he survived the last two weeks of fighting and marching. Mention of being ordered to report to Major Hoffman of Carl Schurz' staff. Miller was assigned to work in Carl Schurz' office. Reference to George B. McClellan. Commentary on how the war was going for the Union. Mention of Irvin McDowell. Opinion on the second battle of Bull Run. Reference to Franz Sigel. Mention of being in Alexandria, Virginia a few days ago. Sent from camp 6 miles from Washington, D.C. Also, 1 ALS from Miller to his mother Ann Miller, thanking her for sending him a photo of her; with references to most of the troops' clothing being burnt up at Centreville, Second Bull Run, Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson, blaming Irvin McDowell for the loss at Bull Run, and Franz Sigel going to Washington; sent from headquarters four miles from Washington, D.C.
