Container Summary

1 TL to Henry McHarg, Jr. from John William McHarg (b. 1843), describing John's experiences as a soldier in the Civil War and Spanish-American War. Includes the following Civil War references: Fort Sumter, the Army of the Potomac, Fitz-John Porter, Fortress Monroe, the "Monitor," the Merrimac," the frigates "Cumberland" and "Congress," Antietam, Frederick (Maryland), the Confederates' attempt to capture St. Louis. Also includes the following Spanish-American War references: building hospitals at Fortress Monroe and Savannah (Georgia), the transport "Sedgwick," taking a cargo of mules and horses aboard the transport "Kintuck" from Seattle to China, and serving in the Philippines. John mentioned that he offered his services to the quartermaster general in World War I but was rejected because he was too old. Sent from Albany, New York.
