Container Summary

1 AL (copy) dated 4/2/1844 from Washington Irving (1783-1859), U.S. Minister to Spain (1842-1846), to U.S. Secretary of State [John C. Calhoun (1782-1850), U.S. Secretary of State (4/1/1844-3/10/1845)], discussing at length the recall of Pedro Alcantara Argaiz, the recent diplomatic tension over the island of Cuba, the case of Maximo de Aguirre (U.S. Consul at Bilbao, Spain) vis-a-vis Generals Felix Galiano Alcala and Martin Zurbano, and Spanish politics. References to Maria Cristina De Borbon (Queen Mother), Luis Gonzalez Bravo, Joaquin Baldomero Hernandez Alvarez Espartero, Aaron Vail, the end of the insurrections in Alicante and Cartagena and the death of Pantaleon Bonet, and talk of Spain declaring war on Morocco to avenge the death of Victor Darmon (Spanish consular agent in Maragon). Sent from Madrid to Washington, D.C. Pages 182-186. Abel P. Upshur (1790-1844), served as Secretary of State from 7/24/1843 until his death on 2/28/1844. John C. Calhoun was appointed Secretary of State on 3/6/1844 and entered on duty on 4/1/1844. Irving addressed this letter to the "Secretary of State" because he seemingly had heard of Upshur's death but appeared not to know the name of his successor.
