Container Summary

1 AL (copy) dated 3/2/1844 from Washington Irving (1783-1859), U.S. Minister to Spain (1842-1846), to Abel P. Upshur (1790-1844), U.S. Secretary of State (7/24/1843-2/28/1844), with ample discussion of the diplomatic controversy over Cuba, the recall of Pedro Alcantara Argaiz, and the case of Maximo de Aguirre (U.S. Consul at Bilbao, Spain). Irving relayed that the U.S. sought to maintain Spanish control over Cuba by force of arms if necessary. References to Luis Gonzalez Bravo (Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs), Charles Jared Ingersoll's (1782-1862, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives) resolve to go to war with Britain over Cuba, Joaquin Baldomero Hernandez Alvarez Espartero, General Geronimo Valdez, Joaquin de Frias, the case of the "Amistad," Aaron Vail, the commission of Samuel McLean, and news that Angel Calderon de la Barca had been reappointed as Spanish Minister to the United States. Sent from Madrid to Washington, D.C. Pages 174-178. Upshur had died on 2/28/1844 in a gun explosion on the U.S. battleship "Princeton." On the day Irving dated this letter, U.S. attorney general John Nelson (1794-1860) was Secretary of State ad interim, a position he held from 2/29/1844 to 3/31/1844.
