1 AL (copy) dated 2/6/1844 from Washington Irving (1783-1859), U.S. Minister to Spain (1842-1846), to Abel P. Upshur (1790-1844), U.S. Secretary of State (7/24/1843-2/28/1844), with discussion of the death of Luisa Carlota and very lengthy of an insurrection and fighting in Alicante led by Pantaleon Bonet and the Spanish government's response to that insurrection. References to Francisco de Paula, Queen Isabella II, Francisco de Asis (Duke of Cadiz), Manuel Cortina, Salustiano Olozaga, Pascual Madoz, Joaquin Maria Lopez, Joaquin Baldomero Hernandez Alvarez Espartero, an insurrection in Cartagena, an insurrection at Alcoy, Luis Gonzalez Bravo, Ramon Maria Narvaez, Louis Philippe, and quarantine regulations in the Canary Islands. Irving's postscript mentions the Spanish government's blockade of Alicante and Cartagena, the declaration of martial law, Bonet being wounded but escaping, the defeat of the Alicante insurgents, and Irving still being bothered by an ailment.
