Container Summary
1 AL (copy) dated 1/30/1844 from Washington Irving (1783-1859), U.S. Minister to Spain (1842-1846), to Luis Gonzalez Bravo (1811-1871), Spanish First Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, urging modification of the quarantine laws in the Canary Islands. Irving requested that the U.S. African Squadron be permitted to use the Canary Islands as a station for rest and supplies. Irving mentioned that Commodore Matthew C. Perry (1794-1858), commanding the "Macedonian," recently was forced to perform a quarantine of 8 days in Santa Cruz. Sent from Madrid. Pages 167-168.
