1 ALS seemingly in hand of Washington Irving dated 9/6/1843 from Irving (1783-1859), U.S. Minister to Spain (1842-1846), to Abel P. Upshur, U.S. Secretary of State (7/24/1843-2/28/1844), with discussion of Spanish politics. References to President John Tyler (1790-1862, President 1841-1845) appointing Upshur secretary of state ad interim, calls for Ramon Maria Narvaez to become military dictator, Irving being ill, Irving's plan to take leave for France and leave the legation in the hands of Alexander Hamilton Jr., and the loss of the U.S. Steam frigate "Missouri." Sent from Madrid to Washington, D.C. Pages 137-138. Starting two days after the date of this letter, Irving was on leave in Paris for treatment of a skin ailment from 9/8/1843 to 11/30/1843 [Ralph M. Aderman, Ed., et al "The Complete Works of Washington Irving: Letters, Volume III, 1839-1845" (Boston: Twayne, 1982), p. xxxvi].
