1 ALS in hand of Washington Irving dated 7/25/1843 from Irving (1783-1859), U.S. Minister to Spain (1842-1846), to Hugh Swinton Legare (1797-1843), U.S. Secretary of State ad interim (5/9/1843-6/20/1843), reporting that Madrid had fallen to invading armies and describing the resulting political situation. References to the revolutionary government, Queen Isabella II, the Joaquin Maria Lopez cabinet, Joaquin Baldomero Hernandez Alvarez Espartero (Regent), Joaquin de Frias, and Ignacio Valdevieslo (Mexican Minister to Spain). Sent from Madrid to Washington, D.C. Pages 123-124. At the time this letter was sent, Abel P. Upshur had just become U.S. Secretary of State (7/24/1843-2/28/1844; Upshur had been Secretary of State ad interim 6/24/1843-7/23/1843); Legare had died on 6/20/1843.
