Container Summary

1 ALS in hand of Washington Irving dated 7/22/1843 from Irving (1783-1859), U.S. Minister to Spain (1842-1846), to Hugh Swinton Legare (1797-1843), U.S. Secretary of State ad interim (5/9/1843-6/20/1843), describing at length the siege of Madrid by troops from Leon and northern and central Spain under Francisco Javier Azpiroz and Ramon Maria Narvaez, the defection of the Regent's army, and the fall of Madrid. References to Joaquin Baldomero Hernandez Alvarez Espartero (Regent), Evaristo San Miguel (Captain General of Madrid), Antonio Seoane, Martin Zurbano, Martin Iriarte, Queen Isabella II, and Juan Mendizabal. Final paragraph mentions pardon of Captain Love Straw. Sent from Madrid to Washington, D.C. Pages 116-121. Pages 119 and 120 contain no writing but were scribbled out, presumably by Irving. On the day this letter was dated, Abel P. Upshur was U.S. Secretary of State ad interim (6/24/1843-7/23/1843); Legare had died 6/20/1843.
