1 ALS in hand of Washington Irving dated 7/8/1843 from Irving (1783-1859), U.S. Minister to Spain (1842-1846), to Hugh Swinton Legare (1797-1843), U.S. Secretary of State ad interim (5/9/1843-6/20/1843), discussing the insurrection against the Spanish government. References to anti-British feelings in Spain, the Ayacucho faction, Queen Isabella II, Antonio Seoane, Martin Zurbano, Manuel Enna, and Francisco Javier Azpiroz. Sent from Madrid to Washington, D.C. Pages 112-114. Legare became ad interim Secretary of State on 5/9/1843 after resignation of Daniel Webster. Legare had died on 6/20/1843, and Abel P. Upshur became Secretary of State ad interim from 6/24/1843-7/23/1843 and held the post of Secretary of State from 7/24/1843 until his death on 2/28/1844.
