Container Summary

1 ALS in hand of Washington Irving from Irving (1783-1859), U.S. Minister to Spain (1842-1846), to the U.S. Secretary of State [William S. Derrick, Chief Clerk of State Department, acting Secretary of State 6/21/1843-6/23/1843], providing analysis of Spanish politics, in particular the insurrections against the Spanish government. References to Joaquin Baldomero Hernandez Alvarez Espartero (Regent), Joaquin Maria Lopez, General Juan Prim, Queen Isabella II, the murder of Miguel Antonio Camacho, the insurrection in Valencia, Olegario de los Cuetos (Spanish Minister of Marine), and Alexander Burton (U.S. Consul at Cadiz). Sent from Madrid to Washington, D.C. Pages 110-112. For some reason, it appears Irving was copying his own letters into this letterbook at this point in his service as minister to Spain. Note: Daniel Webster's term as Secretary of State ended 5/8/1843. Hugh Swinton Legare was Secretary of State ad interim from 5/9/1843 until his death on 6/20/1843. Derrick's service as acting Secretary of State lasted but a few days. Abel P. Upshur served as Secretary of State ad interim from 6/24/1843-7/23/1843, and he entered on duty as Secretary of State on 7/24/1843, a post he held until 2/28/1844.
