1 AL (copy) dated 5/24/1843 from Washington Irving (1842-1846), U.S. Minister to Spain (1842-1846), to Daniel Webster, U.S. Secretary of State (1841-1843), with detailed analysis of the disbanding of the Joaquin Maria Lopez cabinet, the military shake-up by Joaquin Baldomero Hernandez Alvarez Espartero (Regent), the new cabinet installed under Alvaro Gomez Becerra, and the political prospects of Espartero. References to Convention of Vergara at the conclusion of the civil war with Don Carlos, Queen Isabella II, Juan Alvarez Mendizabal, Olegario de los Cuetos, Pedro Gomez de la Serna, Isidoro de Hoyos, Irving's illness, and the possibility of his taking temporary leave of the legation and leaving it in the care of Alexander Hamilton Jr. Sent from Madrid. Pages 102-107. Note: Webster's last day as secretary of state had been on 5/8/1843. Hugh Swinton Legare was secretary of state ad interim from 5/9/1843-6/20/1843.
