Container Summary

1 AL (copy) dated 5/9/1843 from Washington Irving (1783-1859), U.S. Minister to Spain (1842-1846), to Daniel Webster (1782-1852), U.S. Secretary of State (1841-1843), providing detailed analysis of the defeat and resignation of Spanish ministers, with references to Manuel Cortina, Joaquin Baldomero Hernandez Alvarez Espartero (Regent), Salustiano Olozaga, and Joaquin Maria Lopez. Additional reference to receipt of commissions of Franklin Gage and John Hartman as U.S. consuls at Cardenas and Barracoa, respectively. Sent from Madrid to Washington, D.C. Pages 98-100. [Note that page 98 is the last page numbered in pen by the original letter copyist. That is, the copyist numbered pages 1-98 at the time he copied the letters in 1842-1843. Subsequent pages in the letterbook were numbered in pencil by the manuscripts processor from pages 99-187 in order to aid in cataloging and accessing the letters.] Webster's term as Secretary of State ended on 5/8/1843. Hugh Swinton Legare was Secretary of State ad interim on the day this letter was dated. Swinton held that post from 5/9/1843 until his death on 6/20/1843.
