Container Summary

1 ALS dated 4/9/1823 from Alexander Hill Everett (1790-1847), U.S. charge d'affaires at The Hague (1818-1824), to his brother John Everett, regarding life at The Hague and in Brussels. Includes references to John working in the office of Daniel Webster (1782-1852), the Prince of Orange, King William I (1772-1843) of the Netherlands, King Louis XIV (1638-1715) of France, the popularity of Ivanhoe as a costume at balls, Edward Everett (1794-1865), and Alexander's book "Europe" (1822). A lengthy discussion of Alexander's forthcoming book "New Ideas on Population: With Remarks on the Theories of Malthus and Godwin" is found in the second half of the letter, which includes references to Thomas Robert Malthus (1766-1834) and William Godwin (1756-1836) and essentially argues that an increase in population increases food production and leads to better methods of food production. Sent from Brussels.
