Consists of the Stephen Decatur letter book containing laudatory letters sent to him after the victory of the U.S.S. 'United States' over the H.M.S. 'Macedonian.' Original order of letters maintained. Each letter cataloged as a separate folder.

Container Summary

1 ALS dated 1/22/1813 from John Barker, Mayor of Philadelphia, to Stephen Decatur (1779-1820), commending him and his crew for the victory of the U.S.S. "United States" against the H.M.S. "Macedonian." The Select and Common Councils of the City of Philadelphia wished to present Decatur with a sword. Reference to Philadelphia as Decatur's native city. The letter also was signed by John Reade, Thomas Latimer[?], and Liberty Browne. Sent from Philadelphia to New York. Also, 1 AMS resolution of the Select Council of the City of Philadelphia dated 12/14/1812 accompanies the letter, thanking Decatur and mentioning the commemorative sword; document signed by Thomas Leiper (1745-1825).
