Herbert, Secretary of the Navy (1893-1897), to McElmell, officially placing him on the Retired List of Officers of the Navy with the rank of Commodore; and 1 ALS dated 6/19/1896 from Holy Cross College President John F. Leby to McElmell, awarding him with a degree of A.M., along with McElmell's reply to Leby accepting the honor. Other correspondents include John R. Edwards, W. S. Moore, Jas. B. Smith, R. B. Higgins, E. D. Robie, Patrick F. Healy, S.J., and William Roberts.
