1 LS dated 6/2/1882 to Jackson McElmell from the Navy Department Bureau of Steam Engineering, inquiry whether he is able to report for duty first on the "Powhatan" and then on the "Tennessee;" sent from Navy Department. 1 LS dated 8/7/1882 from William E. Chandler, Secretary of the Navy (1882-1885),to McElmell, detaching him from the League Island [Pa.] Navy Yard and ordering him to report for duty on board the U.S. Steamer "Tennessee" as Fleet Engineer of the North Atlantic Station; sent from Navy Department. 1 LS dated 12/7/1882 from J. G. Walker, Chief of Bureau of Navigation & Office of Detail of Navy Department, to McElmell, detaching him from duty on the "Tennessee" and granting him sick leave at the Naval Hospital at Norfolk, Virginia; sent from Navy Department. 1 LS dated 12/14/1882 from James Suddards, Medical Director at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Norfolk, to McElmell, transferring him to the Philadelphia Naval Hospital; sent from Norfolk. 1 LS (copy) dated 12/11/1882 from Walker to Suddards, approving the transfer; sent from Navy Department.
