1 LS dated 5/31/1877 from Daniel Ammen (1819-1898), Chief of Bureau of Navigation & Office of Detail of Navy Department, to Jackson McElmell, ordering him to report to the Chief of the Bureau of Steam Engineering for temporary duty in Washington City; sent from Navy Department. 1 LS dated 6/8/1877 from Richard W. Thompson, Secretary of the Navy (1877-1881), to McElmell, ordering him to report to Rear Admiral James Robert Madison Mullany (1818-1897) for duty on a Board, and then to return to duty on board the U.S.S. "Powhatan;" sent from Navy Department. 1 LS dated 7/2/1877 to McElmell, detaching him from the "Powhatan" and ordering him to report for duty on board the U.S.S. "Hartford;" sent from U.S. Flag Ship "Hartford," Hampton Roads, Virginia. 1 LS dated 7/13/1877 to McElmell, informing him that his orders of 7/2/1877 had been revoked; sent from U.S. Flag Ship "Powhatan," Hampton Roads.
