1 LS dated 4/26/1875 from Daniel Ammen (1819-1898), Chief of Bureau of Navigation & Office of Detail of Navy Department, to Jackson McElmell, ordering him to report to Commodore George Henry Preble (1816-1885) for temporary duty connected with the trial of the U.S. Steamer "Alert;" sent from Navy Department. 1 LS dated 5/20/1875 from Ammen to McElmell, ordering him to report for temporary connected with the trial of the "Alliance;" sent from Navy Department. 1 LS dated 5/27/1875 from Ammen to McElmell, ordering him to report to Vice Admiral Stephen Clegg Rowan (1808-1890) for duty on board the U.S. Steamer "Powhatan" in relief of Chief Engineer J. B. Carpenter; sent from Navy Department. 1 LS (copy) dated 6/11/1875 from McElmell to Ammen, informing him that he reported to Rowan as ordered; sent from U.S.S. "Powhatan," Brooklyn Navy Yard.
