1 ALS dated 5/6/1859 from Isaac Toucey (1796-1869), Secretary of the Navy (1857-1861), to Jackson McElmell, appointing him Second Assistant Engineer in the Navy from 7/21/1858; sent from Navy Department. 1 ALS dated 5/23/1859 from Toucey to McElmell, detaching him from the "Memphis;" sent from Navy Department. 1 ALS dated 5/24/1859 from Samuel Archbold to McElmell, regarding the warrant appointing him Second Engineer; sent from Washington, D.C. 1 ALS dated 8/23/1859 from the Chamber of Commerce of the State of New York to McElmell, awarding him a medal for his service in the work of laying the Atlantic Telegraph Cable; includes reference to an "accident" which "delayed the successful working of the Telegraph;" sent from New York. 1 ALS dated 12/28/1859 from Toucey to McElmell, granting him permission to appear before the Board of Examiners convening at the Philadelphia Navy Yard; sent from Navy Department.
