1 ALS dated 9/23/1858 from Isaac Toucey (1796-1869), Secretary of the Navy (1857-1861), to Jackson McElmell, ordering him to report for duty on board the U.S. Steamer "Memphis;" sent from Navy Department. 1 ALS dated 10/27/1858 from Toucey to McElmell, detaching him from the "Memphis" and ordering him to report to the U.S. Steamer "Canada;" sent from Navy Department. 1 ALS dated 11/23/1858 from Samuel Breese to McElmell, detaching him from the "Canada" and ordering him to report for duty to the "Memphis;" sent from New York Navy Yard. 1 ALS dated 11/30/1858 from Toucey to a group of Second Engineers, stating that engineers should assist in keeping watch when a vessel is not under steam and at anchor; sent from Navy Department. 1 ALS dated 12/7/1858 from Samuel Archbold to McElmell, regarding a warrant; sent from Washington, D.C.
