Container Summary

1 ALS dated 2/13/1858 from Isaac Toucey (1796-1869), Secretary of the Navy (1857-1861), to Jackson McElmell, ordering him to report for duty on board the U.S. Steam Frigate "Niagara;" sent from Navy Department. 1 ALS dated 4/19/1858 from George Saward, of the Atlantic Telegraph Company, to Jackson McElmell, requesting his presence in London to witness the performance of the machinery for laying out the Atlantic Telegraph Cable; sent from London. 1 ALS dated 4/24/1858 from McElmell to Saward, in reply, indicating that he has witnessed the machinery in operation for one day and believes it will operate sufficiently; sent from London. 1 ALS dated 8/19/1858 from Charles Welsh, Acting Secretary of the Navy, to McElmell, detaching him from the "Niagara;" sent from Navy Department. 1 ALS dated 8/26/1858 from McElmell to Toucey, acknowledging receipt of his detachment orders.
