1 ALS dated 4/10/1856 from James Cochran Dobbin (1814-1857), U.S. Secretary of the Navy (1853-1857), to Jackson McElmell, ordering him to report for duty to the U.S. Coast Survey Steamer "Hetzel;" sent from Navy Department. 1 ALS dated 4/15/1856 from W. R. Palmer to McElmell, ordering him to report to John Jay Almy (1815-1895) in Baltimore for duty aboard that vessel; sent from Coast Survey Office. 1 ALS dated 10/29/1856 from Charles Welsh, Acting Secretary of the Navy, to McElmell, detaching him from the "Hetzel;" sent from Navy Department. 1 ALS (copy) dated 11/11/1856 from William C. Wheeler, Senior Engineer of the "Hetzel," to the Examining Board of Engineers, commending McElmell; sent from the "Hetzel."
