Container Summary

1 ALS dated 5/7/1941 from Parker T. Hart to his mother Ella Louisa Hart, as he embarked on a long trip up the Amazon River. Sent from Manaos, Amazonas, Brazil. Includes a reference to Hubert Maness. See also: Hart's manuscript titled "Diary of a Trip for the U.S. War Department from Manaos on the Rio Negro to the Upper Reaches of the Rio Branco, 1941" in Box 5 Folder 5 of this collection. Note: Hart's diary indicates that the War Department instructed Hart and Hubert Maness to scout the Upper Amazon to the headwaters of the Rio Branco to see if there was any truth to the rumors that the Nazis were planning to build an airfield in Brazil to bomb the Panama Canal. Hart's first Amazon diary entry (Box 5 Folder 5) is dated May 20, 1941. In 1987, Hart produced a typed transcription of the diary. Hart's typed transcript is found in Box 5 Folder 6.
