Series-level Scope and Content Note

From the Series:

Consists of 54 folders containing orchestral program notes. Arranged in the original order designated by Lawrence Gilman, who kept the documents in several letter books. Printed program notes (dated 1930-34) written by various annotators and collected by Gilman appear first in the series. The non-Gilman program notes are arranged alphabetically by last name of composer. Gilman made some marginal notes on many of these programs written by others. Program notes written by Gilman himself appear second in this series, arranged alphabetically by last name of composer. The Gilman proram notes are grouped into two segments, one covering 1930-35 and the other spanning 1936-37. The program notes written by Gilman are preserved in various forms: autograph manuscipt, typed manuscript, proof, and printed.
