Container Summary

Contains 1 TLS dated August 1, 1914, from Arthur Ransome to John G. Wilson inquiring about the status of "Blue Treacle" and discussing the state of affairs in Petersburg, Russia, where Ransome wrote the letter: "I suppose no news is bad news about BLUE TREACLE. I do wish it could have been shoved out somehow. Here, things are a great deal more exciting than English papers seem to know. The streets are full of the conscripts going to war, with the tears running down their faces, and cheering, dreadfully, as they go. All the cabhorses have been seized for the cavalry. Trains other than troop trains are practically stopped. The roads into Finland are all but blocked with cannon etc, going to the forts. . And then I get a Daily Mail with some calm rot about England keeping neutrality in case of war. If Eng. . . Oh, but what is the use of that kind of speculation. Poor BLUE TREACLE. Or, have you arranged something?"
