Benjamin S. Lyman., 08/24/1853-08/24/1853
Series-level Scope and Content Note
Please note that correspondents often mention acquaintances or other individuals but will not provide their complete names. When known, the full name is given in parentheses. Also, in the case of the Clarke family, one A.K. Clark signs her name without the 'e' although it is likely that she is a member of the Clarke family. She also cites (her husband?) inconsistently as 'Mr. Clark' or 'Mr. Clarke.' Descriptions for each letter will use the spelling that the correspondent has used.

Container Summary
ALS (dated 8/24/1853, with envelope) to Franklin B. Sanborn from Benjamin S. Lyman. Reference to rooming arrangements. Also regarding meeting Ralph Waldo Emerson: "...I feel much obliged to you for your invitation to go to Mr. Emerson's; but probably failing to appreciate properly the opportunity of becoming acquainted with the great man, I beg leave to decline your offer...Possibly however, when the time comes, I shall feel inclined to accompany you to Concord to see a great many things I never yet saw. I have never yet read any of Mr. Emerson's works & naturally feel less interest in seeing him than you who have both read & admired him..."
