The major portions of the Harry Sylvester Papers consist of correspondence and manuscripts for his published novel, “Moon Gaffney”; and an unpublished work, “A Watch in the Night.”

Notable correspondents include writers, publishers, scholars, political and religious leaders, such as Harry L. Binsse, Paul Beecher Blanshard, Harvey Breit, Dorothy Day, William A.S. Dollard, Waldo Frank, John Farrar, Brendan Gill, Matthew Hoehn, Nathan I. Hentoff, Stanley J. Kunitz, Eugene J. and Abigail McCarthy, Haniel Long, J.F. Powers, Thomas Sugrue, Mark and Irita Van Doren, Stanley Vestal (a.k.a. Walter Stanley Campbell), and Leo Louis Ward.

Conditions Governing Access

Most manuscripts collections at the Georgetown University Booth Family Center for Special Collections are open to researchers; however, restrictions may apply to some collections. Collections stored off site require a minimum of three days for retrieval. Correspondence to Harry Sylvester from Denver Lindley (1904-82), editor and writer: 4 TLS dated 9/25/1944, 4/9/1945, 10/22/1946, 10/17/1946. Includes typed carbon from Sylvester dated 7/23/1944. Reference to publication progress for "Moon Gaffney." Note: TLS dated 4/9/1945 quotes a letter from writer Anne Lindbergh commenting on Sylvester's book. Also, TLS dated 10/17/1946 includes postscript typed note signed by Ruth Stark congratulating Sylvester on the birth of his daughter.
