This folder contains the correspondence sent by Charles G. Herbermann (1840-1916), arranged chronologically, 7 items. Herbermann, together with John Gilmary Shea, founded the United States Catholic Historical Society in 1884. He served as president of the organization from 1898 until his death. He was asked to serve as editor-in-chief of the "Catholic Encyclopedia" in 1905 and oversaw the publication of the first fifteen volumes. TFM and Herbermann first became associated with one another through their connection to St. Francis Xavier College, where they were both alumnus. They would later work together on the "Catholic Encyclopedia" and "Records and Studies" of the U.S. Catholic Historical Society. The subject of the correspondence contained in this folder is related to the projects both were currently working on, as well as Herbermann's efforts to enlist TFM's assistance in the administration of the United States Catholic Historical Society.@ @ ALS 9/13/1899.
