This series contains a collection of the correspondence from the private papers of John D. Crimmins. The subject of the correspondence is primarily related to the philanthropic activities Crimmins was engaged in for the period 1877-1910. Among the people Crimmins corresponded with are Mother Jones, SCJM, James Cardinal Gibbons, Patrick Cardinal Ryan, and Winfield Scott Hancock. Also included in this collection are two letters addressed to Crimmins' wife, Lily Lalor Crimmins (d. 1888), a letter addressed to Abp. Michael Corrigan by Sr. M. Irene, who also corresponded with JDC, and a testimony written by JDC regarding the character of Mother Mary Aloysia Hardey, RCMJ.

Container Summary

Contains the correspondence sent by Thomas M. Mulry (1855-1916), secretary for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, New York City, to John D. Crimmins. Mulry, who earned his fortune in banking, became the most prominent lay man of his age, and was referred to as the "American Ozanam" for his service to charitable causes. He helped to found the National Conference of Catholic Charities and was the recipient of Notre Dame's Laetare Medal, 1 item: ALS 12/28/1892. Thank you letter to JDC for his recent donation of $100.00.
