Container Summary

Contains ALS from Jones to WS, 2 sheets, 3 pages + canceled envelope. Addressed from Harrow-on-the-Hill, Middlesex. First paragraphs as follows:

My Dear Walter, Thank you very much for yr letter which came by this morning's post. I'm very glad you are writing a thing for Blackfriar's about Desmond. Good. Yes, I read your article in The Tablet & thought it managed to convey within the very short space allowed you and in the short time in which you had to do it, a lucid summary of D's life & qualities. It's the most terribly difficult thing to manage in 400 words and had, necessarily, to be skeletal. You managed, I thought, within the limits imposed, to indicate a great deal. No, your reference to myself was in no way offensive and was absolutely factual. @ It so happens that late last night I made an attempt to write a very brief personal tribute and I began by saying that I wished only to underline some of the things which you had indicated. I doubt whether I shall go on with it because I tend to meander & find it so terribly hard to express what I want to say with any conciseness. But I do owe Desmond a great debt & felt a kind of constraint to offer a brief tribute..."
