The Walter Shewring Papers is a small collection of letters, essays and manuscripts by Shewring. The most notable item is the full autograph manuscript of Shewring's translation of Homer's "Odyssey," published by the Oxford University Press (1980). The collection includes some correspondence and printed articles by such distinguished acquaintances as Walter de la Mare, Eric Gill, David Jones, and Arthur Waley.

Container Summary

Contains ALS to WS from the renowned scholar on China, addressed from Austria, as follows - "Songs (from T'ang times onwards) are written with a less strict rhyming than poetry proper; therefore the rhyme categories are fewer in number. For purposes of poetry and song there are only 2 tones "flat" and "oblique." Both poetry & songs generally rhyme flat with flat and oblique with oblique. There is no helpful parallel in Greek. I don't know what the effect of Greek choral lyrics was. A prosody founded on quantity as opposed to stress accent is completely mysterious to me.
