Container Summary

Contains ALS with postmarked envelope from Patrick White to Elizabeth Forbes re book orders. References are made to the following titles: "Land of Unlikeness," "Lord Weary's Castle," "Life Studies," and "Near the Ocean" by Robert Lowell. Also comments on "Modern Cookery" by Eliza Acton, which he found "...disappointing, apart from "How to peel prawns quickly and easily." Her boiled mutton is really no more than my own - something I do perhaps once a year..." Includes another request for a purchase of a casserole from Elizabeth David: "Would you be prepared to go again...to see whether she has a fish kettle? I have been using one of those enamelled Belgian oval casseroles, but it is not long enough when I have a large fish..." Reference to health, and to starting another novel: "...I took such a dislike to the novel I was writing all last year I had to put it away, but a great many unpleasant things happened last year & I think they were partly responsible. Anyway, I am now well away with the new one and only regret the enormous slice of time wasted over the other..."
