 File — Box: 1, Folder: 35
Identifier: 57199

Series-level Scope and Content Note

From the Series:

Note: Almost all of the ensuing original autograph/typed letters have been published in 'The Letters of Teilhard de Chardin & Lucile Swan,' edited by Thomas M. King, S.J., and Mary Wood Gilbert (Washington, D.C.: Georgetown University Press, 1993). The pages on which the published letters appear are indicated in this finding aid in parentheses, e.g., (p.20). The published work is extensively annotated and indexed. This finding aid will not endeavor to duplicate the work of the editors; however, to facilitate searching, folder descriptions and index will include names mentioned at lenghth in the letters. Passing references may not be included. Place names are given as spelled in the correspondence, hence, Peiping, Peking, etc. are not modernized to Beijing. In addition, an effort has been made to reunite original letters with their envelopes where postmarks are legible. Those that arrived separated and cannot be restored to the original letter, comprise a series at the end of the correspondence. Note: The following dated letters are xerox copies. The originals are either located in other collections at the Special Collections Division, Georgetown University Library, or not among this collection of Swan's papers acquired by the library. 1. January 6, 1938 (xerox copy of ALS) - original in Robert T. Francoeur Papers (Folder 1:1). 2. September 24, 1947 (xerox copy of TLS) 3. July 5, 1949 (xerox copy of TLS) 4. October 10, 1949 (xerox copy of TLS) 5. August 10, 1950 (xerox copy of TLS) - original in Mary Lukas-Teilhard de Chardin Collection (Folder 2:16). 6. May 7, 1954 (xerox copy of ALS) - original in Mary Lukas-Teilhard de Chardin Collection (Folder 2:16). A letter dated January 25, 1937, published in 'The Letters of Teilhard de Chardin & Lucile Swan,' edited by Thomas M. King, S.J., and Mary Wood Gilbert (1993), pp.64-67, and addressed to 'Dear Friend,' is located in Series 2 of this collection (Folder 3:10).
