The John L. Brown Papers 1, consist of 99 folders of correspondence from literary and artistic luminaries, including writers Sylvia Beach, John Dos Passos, Anne Fremantle, Katherine Anne Porter, Alice B. Toklas; philosopher Jacques Maritain; photographer Brassai; poets Marianne Moore, Wallace Stevens, and Giuseppe Ungaretti, and many more. Correspondence is arranged alphabetically.

Container Summary

1 ALS + postmarked envelope from Alice B. Toklas to John L. Brown. 2 pages. With news of Harold and Virginia Knapik. Also mentions that she is sending Denise Azam to him in Rome as the latter knows no one there except the French ambassador and the Pope. Other news: John Malcolm Brinnin, biographer of Dylan Thomas, is going to write a life of Gertrude Stein, eventually published as "The Third Rose: Gertrude Stein and Her World" (Grove Press, c.1959, 1961). Also mentions that aileen Hennessy has visited, and that Helen Lay (?), friend of Madame Bille de Mat (?) of Brussels, has sent a message to him.
