Container Summary
Contains ALS from Cardinal Vaughan to Father Noonan. Addressed from Salford, England. Father Noonan is addressed here as "Father Provincial," since he succeeded Father Cornelius Dowling, after the latter's death in 1872, in the position of rector of St. Francis Xavier Church in Baltimore. He also became the head of the American province of the mission of St. Joseph's Society of the Sacred Heart. References are made to - @ Brother Edward Murphy (see Folder 1:26, for biographical data), re his request to be released from his vow. @ Frederick Schmitz (spelled variously Schmidtz, Schmitt, or Smith), re his request to be transferred from the mission in Charleston, South Carolina. @ The letter continues with advice and suggestions from Cardinal Vaughan about the placement of various members of the mission, including James Gore and Denis Hurley. Also, regarding the case of Richard Gore in Louisville, Kentucky (brother of James Gore). The former had apparently signed a document along with John Tardy and eleven rebellious priests in the diocese protesting against the Louisville bishop, McCloskey. Bishop McCloskey eventually demanded that the society withdraw from Louisville. (See Folder 1:25, p.32, for details of the incident.) @ Canon Peter L. Benoit is also mentioned frequently in this letter. (See Folder 1:26, for biographical data.)
