Container Summary

Contains ALS from Cardinal Vaughan to Father Noonan. Addressed from Bishop's House, Salford, England. Cardinal Vaughan responds to Father Noonan's letter of 8/13/1873 (Folder 1:16, transcribed letter). References are made to - @ Father Noonan's vocation to a religious calling rather than to the mission of St. Joseph's Society of the Sacred Heart. Of which Cardinal Vaughan advises: "I must beg of you to remain quietly where you are and do the best you can for the mission until I come out there...With regard to you vocation to join a religious order, I know you so well that I can say with confidence that I do not believe in it." @ The mission's poor financial state; Cardinal Vaughan urges raising a mortgage, and comments, "The mission of Baltimore ought to be able to meet such a burden. If Baltimore cannot do so, what mission shall we ever have that can?" @ Possible readiness of Peter VanDaal for ordination.
