(Folders 1 - 14) Contains original autograph letters signed by Herbert Cardinal Vaughan to the early provincials of the St. Joseph's Society of the Sacred Heart mission headquartered at St. Francis Xavier Church, Baltimore, Maryland. These were Cornelius Dowling, the Society's first provincial and rector, and James Noonan, after the former's death on August 2, 1872. For more information on the history and origin of the Society in Mill Hill, London, refer to the Josephite Archives, Baltimore (Series 3).

He would be consecrated bishop on October 22, 1872. @ Father Charles Vigneront and Brother John Tardy, who later served at St. Augustine, Louisville, Kentucky. @ Plans to found missions in Richmond, Virginia or in New Orleans. @ NOTE: The response from Father Noonan to this letter is transcribed in Folder 1:15, letter dated 11/14/1872.
