Collection-level Scope and Content Note
The Edward Kavanagh Collection consists primarily of copies of autograph signed letters by Edward Kavanagh to individuals to whom he offered legal counsel and to associates during his service as charge d'affaires in Lisbon. The correspondence is in the original letter copy book used by Kavanagh. Other material includes newsclippings of obituaries on Kavanagh; a letter from his biographer Charles W. Collins to the historian Martin Griffin; a black and white photograph of the Kavanagh family mansion at Damariscotta Mills, Maine; and equipment belonging to the letter book - 2 styluses and stencilling plates.

Contains letter book of copies of 16 ALS from EK to the following: - to McCrate, Thomas in Wiscasset, Maine. 1 p. dated twice 11/28/1832 from Newcastle, Maine, and 12/3/1832 from Washington, D.C. - to Amory, Thomas, Jr. 2 pp. dated 7/13/1833 from Damariscotta, Maine. Re. the indemnity case involving services rendered by a U.S. brig, the "Fair America," to a French war ship, the "Foudroyant." The ship's owner was one Jonathan Amory whose claim for compensation was taken up by his son Thomas Amory after his death. This letter concerns selecting a new consul to represent the case in French courts, the former representative, one Isaac Cox Barnet (U.S. consul in Paris) having passed away. - to Storrow, Thomas, Jr., an American (?) lawyer in Paris. 3 pp. dated 8/10/1833 from Damariscotta, Maine. Re. indemnity case involving an American brig, the "Speculator" captured by the French. Requesting copies of documents on the case, which a former lawyer, one Mr. DelaGrange, failed to assist in procuring from the French courts. - to Sprague, Peleg (Republican senator of Maine, 1833-34) 3 pp. dated 10/7/1833 from Damariscotta, Maine. Re. preparing a memorial of the indemnity case involving the "Speculator." References to owner of the ship, Nathaniel Bryant, his son Nathaniel Bryant, Jr., and to the former captain of the brig, Henry Little. - to Emerson, Ralph. 4 pp. dated 10/16/1833 from Damariscotta, Maine. Re. transfer of power of attorney from EK to Emerson in the indemnity case involving the brig, "Fair America." Provides Emerson with a summary of the case so far: identifies the three claimants (coowners of the brig) as Matthew Cottrill, John Fossett, and Jonathan Amory (and by his son Thomas Amory after his death). The former two having up to the date of this letter been represented legally by EK, and the last by General William Sullivan, estate administrator for the Amory family. - to Amory, Thomas, Jr. 1 p. dated 10/21/1833 from Damariscotta, Maine. Re. EK refers him to Ralph Emerson for further assistance in the "Fair America" case. - to Wood, Abiel (congressman, Massachussetts). 2 pp. dated 1/13/1834 from Washington, D.C. - to Miller, John in London. 1 p. dated 7/8/1835 from Falsmouth, England. Re. U.S. Legation at Lisbon. - to Ogden, Francis B. (consul of the U.S. Legation at Liverpool). 2 pp. dated 3/3/1836 from U.S. Legation at Lisbon, written during EK's tenure there as charge d'affaires at the court of Portugal (appointed by President Jackson in 1835). Thanks Ogden for forwarding U.S. newspapers to his post; provided instructions for mailing future packages of printed matter and documents. - Vail, Aaron (U.S. charge d'affaires in London, 1832-1836). 2 pp. dated 12/19/1836 from U.S. Legation at Lisbon. Re. queries on protocol for sending official dispatches from post to the U.S. State Department. - to Miller, John in London. 1 p. dated 6/3/1836 from U.S. Legation at Lisbon. Re. receiving despatches and letters. - to Miller, John in London. 1 p. dated 9/1/1836 from U.S. Legation at Lisbon. Re. payment for services rendered in forwarding correspondence to post. - to the president of unnamed college. 1 p. dated 3/25/1836 from U.S. Legation at Lisbon. Re. recommendation of William Welsh as a prospective student at the college. - Miller, John in London. 1 p. dated 10/8/1836 from Lisbon. Re. requesting that all EK's mail be sent via England. - Draft of payment by EK to James Waters. 1 p. dated 9/15/1836. - to Amory, Thomas, Jr. in Boston. 3 pp. dated 7/15/1837 from Lisbon. Re. the indemnity case of the "Fair America." EK advises Amory to prepare a memorial on the case to present to the U.S. president so that the latter might urge the U.S. minister in France to expedite the claim.
