Container Summary

Contains ALS from British author Samuel Butler (1835-1902) to friend Mrs. Augustus Danvers. Subject: Refers to illness of "my friend Jones," probably Butler's lifelong friend Henry Festing Jones whom he first met in January 1876 in London, and who published "Samuel Butler, Author of Erewhon (1835-1902), A Memoir." @ Also mentions "Psalm of Montreal": "I find people generally object to it," and to the critic of many of his writings on evolution, George John Romanes. @ Other literary projects are mentioned: "I shall probably go to the Canton Ticino... & gather illustrations for another book like Alps and Sanctuaries [of Piedmont, 1881] - I have a great many literary notes already made for such a book. The appendix to Life and Habit [an Essay after a Completer View of Evolution, 1877, 1910] is being proceeded with, but I don't suppose I shall do much work at it now till after I have had my holiday, & the Cantata is the chief thing that I am doing at present."
