Contains ALS from British author Samuel Butler (1835-1902) to friend Mrs. Augustus Danvers, an English lady whom he met while travelling in Verona in 1882. Subject: Butler refers to a critical review from the Athenaeum, in which he is "scolded" for "irreverence." Also mentions a dispute with Lydia Becker recently at an At Home held by Mrs. Augusta Webster, June 1884.
