Container Summary
Contains 2 ALS signed "P. Ord," most likely Pacificus, as he refers to James Placidus (cf. letter dated 4/3/1859 as quoted below); and to sending money to Mrs. Pogue, his mother-in-law who had gone with the two children of Pacificus to live in New York some time in 1856 (cf. letters from James Ord to James Placidus referring to this, Folders 2:45-46). @ Letter of 4/3/1859 addressed from Sacramento to Fort Monroe, Va.: "...May good luck attend your efforts on behalf of brother Placy. You are a noble brother! and that's more than I can say for myself or anybody else can." Refers to California politics: "I like your comparison of Broderick [David Colbreth, California Democratic senator 1850-59] to a stump in the road. It's a fact. He does more harm than good for Cal." Gwin [William McKendree, California senator 1850-61) is stronger here now than he has been for years, though not strong enough to rule. He is loaded down with a set of hungry hangers-on without bread of their own or brains of their daddy's getting..." @ Letter of 9/19/1859 from Sacramento to Old Point Comfort, Va.: "I enclose you a draft for $100 for Mrs. Pogue." Requests that Edward counsel Mrs. Pogue on her travel plans: "I hope you will give her the benefit of your counsel. If she should prefer to winter at some place near Old Point Comfort, I shall not object. The climate is not so cold as it is about [New] York and perhaps the society and manners of Va. may suit her better." Also refers to the death of Broderick in a duel with David S. Terry (chief justice of the California supreme court) on 9/16/1959. Gives family news: birth of a daughter to Georgiana - this was probably Louise Ord - and the marriage of their brother Robert Brent Ord. @ Includes reply from Edward at Fort Monroe, Va., 10/20/1859.
