Container Summary

Contains ALS from James Placidus to his son Placidus Andre Ord in Detroit, Michigan: "My Dear Son Placidus - In your sister Kitty's letter which I received seven days after it was written, she compliments you highly. It pleased me very much to learn that you are determined to learn fast so as to be able to write to both your brother Jimmy and myself and to be able to go to college when he comes away...Whatever you once learn well, nothing can take it away from you..." The letter continues with a description of camp life: "Where I am is just like living in the woods - no houses to visit, no strangers seen - nothing but soldiers, negro servants, trees, and mud - the last of which is getting to be very plenty. Last night was the coldest of the season - water froze in our wash basins and it was hard to keep warm during the night. I live now in a good log hut with a brick fire place and chimney and plenty of hard wood to make fire."
