Recounts a meeting with President Ulysses Grant at the White House during which Placidus attempted to obtain a recommendation for his son James Cresap Ord: "We saluted each other when I opened conversation of the objective of my visit - showed him Jimmy's picture - and informed him of the contents of his application, etc."
