Contains 3 ALS from James Placidus to his wife. Written from Detroit and Cairo. @ Letter of 6/5/1863 from Detroit: "My Dear Wife - As the past month has just closed and I promised to do for you in the way of sending you as much of my pay as possible, I have concluded to send you the whole amount for this month - every cent I draw - and will, should my life be spared me, send you as much hereafter as possible so that you may use it as you think proper either to come here or not until you have sufficient to do so comfortably." Includes news of the Starke and Andre families in Michigan. @ Letter of 6/11/1863 from Cairo, Illinois: Last Sunday at noon I received my long expected orders - and where do you think they directed me to report - why down the Mississippi River to General Grant's department." Gives news of Gen. Edward Otho Cresap Ord. @ Letter of 6/25/1863 near Vicksburg: Sends news of Gen. Edward O.C. Ord who was commander of the post. "The General looks quite well and hearty in fact the kind comforts he received from many acquaintances during confinement from his wounded leg has much improved his looks and made him look much younger than before..." @ Note: A xerox copy of this letter is provided for use. The original is severely water damaged and fading.
